Naturally Posed Photos

Trying to pose for photos and have everyone smiling (especially the kids) only leads to frustration and stress, so let me direct and guide you through the process without worrying about what everyone else in the photo is doing. Not everyone feels comfortable in front of a camera, which can be challenging when creating natural family portraits. So, I always go out of my way to break tensions and lighten the mood so everyone can enjoy their time together.

We might get a little silly at times and do some whacky shots that can be some of your favourite photos. For families, I might ask you to spread apart and then quickly rush in and squash mum and dad as I capture the fun and laughter on everyone’s faces. Candid moments are the best moments, as family photos shouldn’t be stiff or overly posed.

Being a mum to three energetic girls means I have tricks up my sleeve to get your little ones (and sometimes big ones) to act natural and cooperate with the camera.

Creating Treasured Family Momentos

My photography style is adept at capturing raw and honest photos. So I don’t always expect you to pose for pictures. Instead, I like to capture those moments when you act natural around your loved ones or while walking around the beautiful nature that surrounds you. The best moments are those in between when you are not expecting me to take your picture. These photos end up being everyone’s favourite moments.

Advice on What to Wear

Start picking two colours and two neutral. The aim is to coordinate, and not all match. You can bring texture and patterns into the mix, but don’t let everyone wear patterns. You want to wear clothes that can quickly move around without readjusting them.

One sneaky trick is to get mum to select her outfit and then select everyone’s outfit from there! So, for example, if mum chooses a blue dress with white and pink flowers, everyone else needs to select clothes in these colours.

Avoid bulky and bulgy clothes as they may look weird when bending down or squatting while playing with your child. Likewise, short, tight dresses can often be too revealing if bending down or squatting. Instead, flowing skirts with cinched waists or high waisted tops with a tucked-in shirt is flattering and give lots of movement. They are so versatile that they look fabulous in any pose, no matter what you do.

Best Time to Schedule a Shoot

For the best lighting, I love the golden hour. Golden hour is the soft light that comes about 15-20 mins before the sun sets and can be magical in the correct location. At this time of day, the light produces soft, filtered and flattering light.

If it’s not realistic to shoot at this time for an outdoor photo shoot, then we need to pick a location with trees (or other tall structures) that can filter the harsh sun and reduce haze. Lighting such as fog or overcast light can create different moods, so don’t be afraid to schedule a shoot on a ‘bad weather day’.

Tip! Try and schedule time around the baby’s naps if you have a baby, as a happy bay means a less stressful session!

Best Victor Harbor Locations

During my off days, I usually roam around the south coast, scouting locations perfect for photo shoots, and as someone who grew up in Victor Harbor, I spent my childhood exploring this beautiful coastal town.

When it comes to the Fleurieu Peninsula, we are spoiled for choice from the pristine beaches across Goolwa, Port Elliot, Middleton, victor harbor, encounter bay and waitpinga. Feel free to contact me and discuss the setting you are looking for to best compliment your photoshoot.

Families can choose a specific location for their photoshoot, use the KOA studio or explore the studio’s several acres of rural countryside, gum trees, wisteria arches, enchanting gardens and more.

The location around koa studio has lots of tall, neutral grass, which is perfect for any colour outfit. There are also dirt trails and gardens, which look stunning close to sunset.
